Sean O’Brien Sean is a Sheffield man and he attended local Catholic schools, not least St. Catherine’s Primary school where he is now a foundation governor. At the age of nineteen Sean felt that he had a calling for the priesthood and Bishop Gerald Moverley sent him to the Jesuit run Campion House at Osterley, Middlesex, a pre-seminary college which helped discern one’s vocation. Sean spent two happy years there and says that his experience of the Jesuit formation more than any other shaped him into a Christian layman, hopefully a good one. After Campion House, it was off to the Royal English College, Valladolid, Spain where Sean spent five years studying Philosophy and Theology. Having decided that the priesthood was not for him, – saying that he got vocation mixed up with vacation – Sean continued his studies in Philosophy at the University of Hull. Since then, Sean has taught in various secondary schools throughout South Yorkshire and he is a tutor on the Foundation Degree, teaching Sacramental Theology to willing students. He continues to study in his beloved area of Philosophy, as well as Theology, and hopes to pursue a Ph.D. Sean is an active member of the parish of St Charles Borromeo. Sean is a member of the General Teaching Council for England, the Higher Education Academy, the Institute for Learning, the Royal Institute of Philosophy and the Catholic Men’s Society of Great Britain.

Having worked for many years as a secretary in the Radiology Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, with a few years spent working in the steel industry, I retired in 2007. I have been interested informally in theology and spirituality most of my life. In 2001 began studying part-time for the degree of MA in Theology and Religious with the University College of York St John (later York St John University), being awarded the degree in 2006. I was asked to become an Associate Tutor on the Foundation Degree in Theology and Ministry which is run by York St John University; teaching takes place at various centres in Yorkshire, and in our diocese is at Hallam Pastoral Centre. The module I teach is the summer school in Patterns of Christian Spirituality, which I began in 2007. For many years I have been personally drawn chiefly to Cistercian spirituality. I am a member of Our Lady and St Thomas parish in Woodseats.
