NEW YEAR….. NEW CATHOLIC PRIMARY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAMME
COME AND SEE
Staff and pupils will not have much longer to wait for the publication of the new Catholic religious education programme ‘Come and See’. This programme will be formally introduced into all Diocesan schools from September 2012 and will replace ‘Here I Am’ which has been the backbone for the teaching of Religious Education for the last twenty years. Come and See is easy to use and teacher-friendly. It has been written by a group of experienced diocesan advisers in consultation with specialist advisers and theologians. Last year ten Diocesan Primary schools volunteered to trial one of the newly developed topics and feedback at the Religious Education Conference was very positive indeed. Colleagues indicated the reviewed topic provided a rich resource supported by a wealth of material. Built in assessment was most welcomed and helped teachers to gain a clear understanding of how pupils were progressing.
The programme is based on the theological foundations of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Catechism and the forthcoming revised Religious Education Curriculum Directory. It includes the Levels of Attainment in Religious Education which are integrated throughout the programme. The teaching of Judaism and other world religions is included.
Built around a one year cycle, each theme is explored through different topics in each age group. These topics are set out in detail and will be supportive for all teachers especially those who are new to teaching religious education as well as allowing creativity and further development for more experienced teachers.
The programme will be published in a series of Teachers Books, one for each year group together with a wide variety of resources for every topic which will be available to download on line. This will include interactive whiteboard material, power point presentations, picture banks, music etc. God’s Story and Church’s Story will remain essential resources of the programme.
There has been a significant contribution from CAFOD who have worked alongside the writers of Come and See and are producing a range of interesting material to support the new programme.
Come and See will be available from July 2012 and considerable In Service work is being planned to support the introduction of the new programme. A date has been agreed in summer term for Cafod to visit the Diocese to work with Religious Education Co-ordinators to support one of the introductory In Service sessions.
This new programme is eagerly awaited and will further support the needs of all pupils in Catholic primary schools in the Diocese of Hallam.
