Letter from Philip Jakob, Director of Music for the Cathedral & Diocese of Hallam

Dear Musicians of the Diocese of Hallam

Re: FORTHCOMING EVENTS

I hope you are all well and enjoying the challenges of finding music for the Revised translation of the Roman Missal. In the Cathedral Parish we are also facing the challenges of moving to St Matthew’s in Carver Street while re-ordering takes place. We hope to be back in St Marie’s in October and there will probably be a grand opening liturgy soon after which I hope you will also be interested in supporting with your skills. Perhaps beyond that we will welcome a third Bishop for Hallam and it would be wonderful to call on your skills again for that.

For the time being I invite you to offer your skills for the following events:

Nottingham Diocese – Music Day

Some of you at the eastern end of the Diocesan might be interested to attend a day I’ve been invited to contribute to on music for the revised Roman Missal. This will be on Saturday 28 April  at the Trinity Centre in Newark. Contact Fr Alex Adkins for further information: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Mass of Thanksgiving for those received into the Church at Easter

At 3pm on Pentecost Sunday 27 May Bishop John invites those received into the Church in their local parishes to re-convene for a celebration of Mass in the St Matthew’s, Carver Street in thanksgiving for the work of the Spirit in them and for their response. Singers will be welcome.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee

On Sunday 3 June Bishop John will celebrate the 0930 Mass at St Matthew’s, Carver Street Sheffield in thanksgiving for the many years of service by our Queen. Other parishes may wish to consider including at least the National Anthem in their worship that day.

Corpus Christi Procession 2012

Recent years have seen the revival of the practice of holding a Corpus Christi Procession in Sheffield City Centre. This year we are hoping to offer this opportunity at a time when an even greater number of people can attend. Therefore on Sunday 10 June 2012 the Procession will start at 3pm from the Chapel in Norfolk Row. Singers are invited to gather at 2pm in the Parish Room (enter via the corner tower door on corner of Norfolk Row and Norfolk Street)

Inter-Diocesan Pilgrimage to Padley

This annual pilgrimage takes place on Sunday 15 July with Mass starting at 3.30pm. Singers are invited to gather for a rehearsal at 2.30pm

Greenbelt Festival

The annual gathering of about 30,000 Christians takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse over the August Bank Holiday weekend (24-27 August). Bring your own tent, caravan (or book into more permanent off-site accommodation) and take the opportunity to hear some great music, inspirational speakers and challenging worship. Visit the Greenbelt website for more details.

Recording of ‘New Wine’ Mass

This recording was made in the Memorial Chapel of Mount St Mary’s College on 23 June 2011 with great thanks to the Headmaster and staff of the College Music Department. Involving singers and instrumentalists from the Mount and a Federation of three Sheffield primary schools the recording is placed on the diocesan website so that all may learn the music. Music copies are available from myself.

Diocese of Hallam Website – www.hallam_diocese.com

This has been revised last year. If you go into the Liturgical Music section (under Education & Formation) a whole new world will open up for you!

I am hoping that future communication can be done via the website and through email so make sure that you register your interest and contact details on the form on the Liturgical Music Home page.

STOP PRESS: Conferences/Summer Schools

The National Network of Pastoral Musicians (NNPM) holds its biennial gathering at Worth Abbey in Sussex starting in the evening of 20 July and finishing around midday on Sunday 22 July. This event tends to attract a great many people and this year’s theme is singing the psalms. John Bell, Geraldine Latty, Andrew Maries and Stephen Dean will be among the many contributors.
