"Our participation in Mass is completed by our participation in action, in the mission of the Church" said Bishop John when discussing the Year of Faith. Faith and action are inextricably linked in the Pope's vision for the Year of Faith and indeed this reflects the thoughts of James the apostle and many of the Old Testament prophets. Not for nothing did this Third Assembly of the Diocese of Hallam present reflections of two aspects of Christian life, Spirituality and Mission.
Those who were present for the gatherings over three Saturdays and those who were unable to attend will benefit from reading the following resume of the two sessions.
How honest are you?
On Sunday 8 July at the 1830 Mass in St Mathew's Carver Street where the Cathedral parish has been 'out-of-residence' since September Bishop John gave a homily drawing our understanding of prophetic witness and utterance into a new vein.
The Word (and Law) that sets us free
Homily given by Bishop John at St Matthew’s, Carver Street, Sheffield on 22nd Sunday of the Year B – 2 September 2012
When I was a young bishop there was an older bishop whose priests claimed that his purpose was to protect God from the people of the Diocese!
A message from Bishop John
Welcome to the revised website of the Diocese of Hallam, launched only a few weeks after the historic visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom.
The website gives a snapshot of our diocese. It is full of information concerning parish and religious communities, diocesan services, organisations, schools and events. This website, however, is more than just information. It reminds us of the resources we have for the mission of the Church in the world around us. Our mission is to be the Body of Christ in the world. We seek to be a prayerful community of love, whose presence serves and proclaims the Good News.
Whether you are a frequent visitor to our site or have come across it for the first time, thank you for visiting us. We trust you will find all the information presented here to be of interest to you.
May God bless us all
