Bishop's Visitation

According to the Ceremonial of Bishops 133 (Liturgical Handbook for Bishops) when the Bishop makes a pastoral visitation on a Sunday 'it is commendable that the rite of blessing and sprinkling water replace the usual penitential rite.' The order is Greeting - invitation to pray - prayr of blessing over water - Bishop sprinkles himself, concelebrants, ministers, clergy and the people. During the sprinkling an accompanying song is sung.

Suggestions may include the following:

Water of Life (Stephen Dean)

Springs of water (Haugen)

When the Bishop has returned to the chair and the singing ended, he stands and, with hands outstretched, says the concluding prayer. Then, according to season, the Gloria is sung or recited.

In every other respect the music follows the liturgical norms for Mass.

"The four days of the Papal Visit brought the Catholic Church in England and Wales to a different and new place, emphasising and enhancing the opportunity we have to live and proclaim our faith in public," said Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham during his homily at a special Mass on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin (8 December).
  • Papal Visit DVD Released

  • A Call to Freedom
The UK media has repeatedly stated that Pope Benedict’s visit to Spain has touched on familiar themes. Yet, as usual, it has been left to the Catholic press to identify the central point of his message: freedom. Whilst the secular reports quote the Pope as calling Europe to return to its Christian roots, they frequently omit the reason for such a challenge: freedom.
