The Quiet Garden
Having read the article in the Hallam News and seen details about the Quiet Garden in Stainforth we decided to go along and see what was happening. Saturday 15th November was bright, clear and dry, a good sign considering Friday had been wet, windy and miserable! We found the Church in Stainforth quite easily thanks to the map we had been sent and made our way to the large hall where we were greeted with warmth and a great sense of enthusiasm Parishioners showed us the work done so far, and shared their hopes for the future. Hot, home made soup, sandwiches and lots of laughter were the first order of the afternoon when over 30 people, ages ranging from nine to ninety joined together to continue the journey of the Quiet Garden.
After a wonderful opening prayer led by Fr Roy Pannell, we all set about our tasks for the afternoon. Some dug, some planted, some hoed, some advised and some prepared the hall for our next session. The sun shone and people worked together, young and old, side by side. -0000’s of bulbs and 00’s of rose bushes were planted. At the end of our ‘work’ it was incredible to see how much planting had been achieved. However none of this could have been achieved without the hard work that had been going on for months by the group from Our Lady’s whose vision and determination made this wonderful day possible.
Our afternoon concluded with Fr Andrew Browne sharing his faith journey with us in his own honest and very human way leading into a concluding prayer. A beautiful ending.
In the true spirit of the Quiet Garden we were strangers and pilgrims (from Sheffield and Leeds!) and we were welcomed and treated as friends. Thank you to everyone at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. We look forward to a return visit in the spring.
