Rarely has an attempt been made to devise a systematic religious instruction for adults from the three cycles of liturgical readings for Sundays and feasts as found in the new Lectionary. The readings are dispersed over a cycle of three years designated A, B and C. This three year cycle corresponds to the three synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. It answers important questions:

What is your goal in life? Were this question put to people of all nations and races throughout the world, a great variety of answers would be forthcoming. But underlying them all would be this answer: My goal is life! I want to be fully alive. I want fullness of life such that it will never end.

Where can eternal life be found? This catechism offers the answers from the ABC Lectionary, the book from which the Word of God is read at Mass on Sundays and Feast-Days.

The main answer is that given by Jesus to the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well: "Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4, 13-14).

The Liturgical Seasons

On the night before he died, Jesus uttered this prayer: "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that your Son may glorify you; and, through the power over all mankind that you have given him, let him give eternal life to all those you have entrusted to him. And eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17, 1-3).

As Jesus is sent to reveal the Father, the prime question is: Who is Jesus? The ABC Lectionary gives a general answer to his question for each of the four Liturgical Seasons: Advent--the One who comes now and at the end of the world; Christmas--the One who manifests himself in the flesh in order to reveal God the Father; Lent--the One who leads us from servitude to sonship; Easter--the One who is exalted to the right hand of the Father and who sends us the Holy Spirit.

Sundays of Ordinary Time

The person who diligently seeks answers to the question: Who is Jesus? will also find answers to the question: Who am I? For the more he comes to know the Son and the Father and the more he is inspired by the Holy Spirit, the more he comes to know himself. Indeed, the Spirit makes him conscious of being a child of God and prompts him to utter Abba! Father! (Romans 15, 15-16; Luke 11, 2).

Feast Days of the Saints

Generally speaking we can find the answers to the question Who Am I? concentrated in the readings for the Sundays or Ordinary Time, those outside the four Liturgical Seasons.

Also during Ordinary Time occur some major Feasts that stand by themselves: Trinity Sunday, Christ the King, etc. There are also the feast days of the Saints, the readings for which encourage each one of us to discover his or her potential and identity in the examples of Mary, Joseph, Peter, Paul or any of the saints presented to us as models.

Themes: general, fundamental and particular

This catechism first presents a theme that is particular to a given Sunday or Feast-Day and then shows how it is treated in each of the three readings. There are general themes for each of the four Liturgical Seasons; besides, there are a series of Sundays which each have a fundamental theme. The themes particular to each Sunday in a given series are aspects of its fundamental theme. Thus in Lent, the general theme is Christ's leadership. In year A, the fundamental theme is how he leads us from a state of sin to a state of grace; in year B, from the impulse of the flesh to that of the Spirit; in year C, from aversion to conversion. For Sundays of Easter, the fundamental theme in year A is Faith; in year B, Charity; in year C, Hope.

This is an absolutely fascinating site set up by a group of missionary orders.  As well as materials about the missions it has daily updates on news from parts of the world never usually reported on in our country.  Local missionary priests and sisters send in daily reports of the current situation in trouble spots across the world long after reporters have gone home.  Without the "eng" in the address, the site is offered in French, Italian, Spanish and German.

www.timeforcitizenship.org

Dear Colleague,

A group of Primary Schools in the UK and Ireland have been working together to create a FREE website for Primary Schools on Citizenship. Their work can be viewed at www.timeforcitizenship.org.

We are hoping to get children working together to discuss aspects of Citizenship across these countries, to offer prizes for submissions to the Art gallery, and to give children a voice in the further advance of the website. The termly prizes for winning entries to the Art Gallery will be £50 for 1st, £30 for 2nd and £20 for 3rd.

A library of FREE lesson plans is available to teachers to download and use. We hope that they, in turn, will send us some plans or some aspects of an exciting lesson they have taught to share with others.

There will be a termly FREE prize draw for the schools who submit lesson plans and/or details of projects. The previous winners were schools in Dublin, Barnsley and Brussels – prizes to date have been a Microsoft X-box, a combined TV/video unit and a digital camera.

There is also an area covering parents and the emergency services, particularly the police. Various police forces are using the site to share their programmes and some of the "stuff" is excellent!

Would you like to view our site for Primary schools by Primary schools, at www.timeforcitizenship.org with a view to forming mutual links?

This a totally free service, with no strings attached.

If you have found a site that you feel would be of interest to others please contact the webmaster, who will insert it on this page.
